Random acts of kindness to people you know

There are very few moments in my life when i do not like being single. Sure I get the occasional pang of aloneness; on cold winters nights when it’s definitely a stay in and snuggle with a DVD kind of night. or nights like tonight when I’ve got to go out for dinner and it’s going to be me, myself and I sitting at the table.

But in the main I love the independence of being single. Except for those moments I term “Need a man”  moments. For the boy jobs around the home. I hate having to climb up on a chair to change a light bulb they can do without one. I loathe having to sort out the DVD player when a cable comes out, and having to make sure my car is safe for journeys? Please spare me!

So it was a very grumpy single girl who drove her car into the service station the other night. About to drive for three hours the last thing I wanted was to run out of oil and water. But it’s a BOYS job. And I didn’t want to do it.

I considered throwing a temper tantrum but might not have been a good look. I then got a phone call from a friend about something else. He was AWESOME. He listened to my moans and would have come and helped but he was a hundred kilometres away. So he did the next best thing. He talked me through it. He didn’t laugh at my weird and simplistic questions, and I got the job done.

I might not have had a change to my single status, but I certainly felt a lot less alone. And it felt great.

I am constantly amazed at the sheer generosity of people around me. It’s easy to be thankful for these moments- that cost others time and a little effort. but help you feel so much less isolated and having to do it all yourself. I often think it’s the best thing I’ve learnt from being single. That no woman or man can be an island- that even the fiercely independent and capable ones amongst us truly benefit from a little help from our friends.
