The Cake Eaters: Having it and Eating it Too

I think I have become too used to the fast paced slickness of big budget movies. I’ve been to quite a few of them this year. So The Cake Eaters, which is set in small town America and is about three men (a father and his two sons) and their love lives, was a huge change of pace.
I walked into the movie feeling a little out of sorts. My girls are away and my plans have changed so many times today I’ve been feeling out of sync. I actually ummed and ahhed about going as I’d read it was about a family coping with the loss of a mother, and then the “slow” brother hooks up with a teenager with a degenerative neurological disease (Played by Kristin Stewart.)
It was slow paced, it was shot, I would say, on a tiny budget and yet, it was stunning. I walked out feeling remarkably upbeat and refreshed and conscious that I’d seen one of the more endearing movies of the year.
I am still not a fan of Kristin Stewart, which I know will have twilight fans sobbing their wee little hearts out. This was meant to be the movie where we saw she could act. I just think I have an almost pathological dislike for her that I never quite got past. The condition she is meant to have just seemed to fit the blah personality I always see on the screen- though she was convincing in terms of her gait and slurred speech.
But the movie itself was lovely. It’s full of generational relationships, the relationship between man and women, it includes affairs and virginities, and both the heart wrenching pain of sex, and the incredibly healing side. It may be about three men and their sex life, but in reality it was about three women taking control in their own way and calling the shots.
I loved the movie. I don’t think everyone would like it- it’s complicated in it’s simplicity, it’s not filled with special effects, and any violence is completely fitting, but I do think it is charming and very much worth going to see.
