Because my hair is a wee bit tricky to manage, I’m pretty picky about what shampoo I use. I was given some Giovanni Organic Hair Care to try and have become a huge fan. – and now use it all the time. Mountain Men is the most beautiful book I’d ever written and I loved researching it- talking to strong, taciturn and lovely old men from New Zealand’s High Country. I have such a respect for the men in this book- and it was a huge privilege to write it.

I loved this book. As someone who attended church for seventeen years I am pretty sensitive to books that preach at me. But this lovely true story about two men- a jew and a christian whose lives are so different but both demonstrate a life of faith and all the beautiful parts (and poor!) that come with it, is just lovely. It’s a lovely gentle book, and I loved it.

Where Angels Fear

I wrote about this book a few weeks ago- it’s written by two women about their work supporting families and victims of child abuse, and campaigning law changes to protect innocents. It’s less wrenching than I thought it would, but certainly inspiring. And I like the thought that buying this book(if you don’t win it) gives two women who have given so much of their own lives the means to continue to work to help people affected like they were. It’s also an amazing reminder that our past baggage should be no preventer of our future good.

A Change in Altitude

My first date at university in Santa Barbara was with a guy called Brent. I had seen Brent and his friend often at the gym and he asked me to his house for dinner – he was cooking! Once I got to his place he asked me what kind of burrito I wanted (from the greasy spoon down the road).

After burritos (they were actually very good) we started to watch an old DVD. Right as the movie got good he stood up, came over to where I sat on the couch…sat on me and FARTED! I’m talking big, smelly, Mexican food fart. He thought it was hilarious. I didn’t.

The next time I saw him was 8 years later- he was on “Wheel of Fortune”, I was safely far away from his stinky bum.

Happily Single

I had tickets to a music concert, Destinys Child -I really really wanted to go, we had to drive 2 hours to get to the concert venue, I was keen to get there early to get in the front. Boyfriend agreed, but it turns out he doesnt do well in crowds, as the crowd grew and it got more exciting ( we had been waiting about an hour) he got more agitated, more paranoid, he was sure some one was hitting on me, then he was sure Id been smiling at them , then he was sure some one tried to steal his bag, and then he thought some one bumped into him on purpose, he got really aggressive and yelled ‘f this’ – even though every one around us was just happy and excited the concert doors were about to open, it was really embarrassing, he said ‘f this we are outta here and I had to leave. He said he make it up to me , still blaming everyone else, and take me to Sky City casino as we’d come all the way to auckland. Got to sky city and he was asked for ID, which he didnt bring, so we had to leave there too…long quiet 2 hour drive back home.

Bella:

While backpacking, I met a nice young chap (boy A) who had come to UK with a couple of friends and his brother but they’d split into two groups and it was just him and his friend when I met him. We’d gotten together for a month or so.

He headed away backpacking for a couple of weeks and while he was away I’d gone out to a pub with a friend. Over a nice gin, I had one of those weird “eyes across room” moments with this rather sexy chap and to cut a long story short, ended up spending a lot of time with this new guy (boy B) – thinking “ack, the original hookup was never serious and backpacking isn’t about relationships”.

To cut a long story short, Boy B and I were having dinner in a pub one night when he got a text that his brother was in town. We went out to meet them and, yep, you see where this is going. Boy A was Boy B’s brother. Awful awful situation… must have been attracted to the genes or something! Sinful. I was young. Foolish…. etc etc

Mrs Desperate:

I made the mistake of going out with a miser for a while. I broke up with him because I realised it wasn’t going anywhere, but he still wanted to remain friends and I foolishly agreed. Anyway, it was my birthday and I arranged to have a girlie lunch with my best friends to celebrate. He kept moaning and whining about how he wanted to take me to lunch on my birthday, and how it wouldn’t be the same if we did it on another day. So I postponed my girlie lunch, and he picked me up and took me … to a takeaway fish and chips shop! I bit my tongue as we ordered. As usual, he ordered the most expensive things on the menu. But when it was time to pay he realised he’d ‘forgotten’ his wallet. So I had to pay for my own birthday lunch! After that, I dumped him as a friend as well. (Thank God for my girlfriends, we laughed a lot about it the next day at my real birthday lunch)

Rebecca:

ok, so my date was rather creepy!
I decided to go on a date with this guy I’d recently met after he mustered up the courage to ask me for a dinner out. Fairly harmless I thought. He picked me up and we were driving around for ages, from one side of akl to the other. I was creeped out enough, then he announced he had been following me for four years, planning ‘our life’ together!! OMG! I only knew he exsised a few weeks ago!! He rips out this album of photos of ‘our’ two dogs and lots of me in the distance and him in frame.
then he asked if he could take me to some forrest out wes… needless to say i jumped out of the car and got a cab home!
